Be You

On the way to school this morning, there was a boy walking down the street wearing a hat that can only be described as a kitten. It was white and it had little ears and a little red nose. This guy was in high school. My son, who is 11, immediately started making fun of him. I was crushed. I thought I'd been setting a good example and teaching him right from wrong, in this regard at least. So I stopped the car and did my best to explain how important it is to be able to express yourself, and to not live your life by other peoples standards. If that guy likes that hat, then I love that he's wearing it. Changing the world really does start with our children. They're the next generation. The ones who's hands the worlds fate will be in.
Some days it's hard not to criticize what he's picked out to wear to school. Either because it doesn't match or because he's picked out his crappiest duds, but then if I tell him that he shouldn't wear that to school, I'm being hypocritical. It's a fine line sometimes with kids. I just want him to be himself and let others be who they are as well.
